READ THIS! {The Fault In Our Stars}

I know the book club series on the blog is called "Read This!," but seriously, you have to read this, August's pick of the month, The Fault In Our Stars by John Green.

Amazon describes this book as, "Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten. Insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw, The Fault in Our Stars is award-winning-author John Green’s most ambitious and heartbreaking work yet, brilliantly exploring the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love."

This books was, without question, one of the best books I have ever read. It is also, I will warn you, one of the most moving books that I have ever read. In fact, even if you're not a crier, this book's sheer beauty and genius will move you to tears. Don't believe me? I dare you to read it and not cry. (And yes, that's a challenge. Let me know how it goes.)

Anyway, yes, this book is technically young adult fiction, and yes, the main characters are in high school, but the themes of this book - friendship, love, and dealing with tragedy - are themes that each and every one of us can relate to. Green writes with power and knowledge behind every word, bringing you into Hazel and Augustus' story, and making you, the reader, hang on so tightly that when it's over, you won't believe it isn't real, or that you can't change what has happened. It is beautifully written and deeply inspired, and their story will stay with you long after you read this fantastic novel.

So, did you read along? Did you love it as much as I (and everyone else in the world) has loved it? One of my favorite things was the title - The Fault in Our Stars - and how Green changes it slightly from the Shakespeare line in (my favorite!) Julius Caesar. Why do you think he might have changed the line? Is the fault in our stars? Or do you think it's in ourselves? I'd love to hear what you thought about this novel!

And now, for September's READ THIS! selection, The Keeper of Lost Causes by Jussi Adler-Olsen...

Amazon describes this book as, "Carl Morck used to be one of Copenhagen's best homicide detectives. Then a hail of bullets destroyed the lives of two fellow cops, and Carl - who didn't draw his weapon - blames himself. So a promotion is the last thing he expects. But Department Q is a department of one, and Carl's got only a stack of Copenhagen's coldest cases for company. His colleagues snicker, but Carl may have the last laugh, because one file keeps nagging at him: a liberal politician vanished five years earlier and is presumed dead. But she isn't dead ... yet. Darkly humorous, propulsive and atmospheric, The Keeper of Lost Causes introduces American readers to the mega-bestselling series fast becoming an international sensation."

Written in a similar style to Stieg Larsson's, author of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, I am so excited to read this book! I hope you'll read along with me as I dive into this thriller!

  1. I loved loved loved The Fault in Our Stars. I saw many of my students reading it last year (I teach middle school ELA) and I finally read it this summer. I just loved it...such a sweet story. I'm glad to hear another adult loved it too.
