Sawhorse Leg Desk {IKEA Hack}

I did it. I got the desk I wanted. Or I should say, I got the desk and made it into the desk I wanted. Remember a few weeks ago when I made this funky moodboard?

I mentioned then that I wanted this desk in white, but that IKEA didn't sell it in white and that I was prepared to fix that.

And I need to be honest with you, I went rogue with this. The original plan was to spray paint, but as I quickly realized how much spray paint this desk needed, that plan quickly changed course. Except that, um, I had already spray painted almost everything.

First, I put together the legs of the table.

Then, I spray painted them with white satin Rustoleum spray paint.

Light coats is key, and that's what I started to do, but then Josh pointed out to me that I was creating a pretty big cloud of spray paint dust. I'd never spray painted on a balcony, but it became pretty clear pretty quickly that I would have to take my project downstairs and outside. So, I did.

I took everything else outside and laid down big boxes and began spraying it as well. But with the heat, the sun glare, and the large need for yet more spray paint, after I had the legs and those 3 smaller pieces done, I called it quits for the day.

With the desk top back on our deck, I decided that I would go back to step 1 and prime it, and then cover the entire desk with regular white paint. And you know what? It worked.

After a few days and a few coats of paint, last night I brought it inside and finally put the desk together!

I'm so, so excited with how it looks and, while the rest of the room is still a mess ... (see terrible, blurry pictures below)

... I'm looking forward to completing it soon and the desk was just the first step!

I'm so excited about how this desk turned out! Have you hacked anything from Ikea lately? Or transformed any other furniture? Do your projects always go according to plan? Mine sure don't always! I'd love to hear from you!

  1. Ah! I just bought a desk from the Mill Stores and painted it a matte white for my office. Just a simple, plain jane desk. But then I saw this one a month later and was so sad I didn't get this desk to add some interest to my room! I would love it in white! :(

    1. Hi Rosie! The link for the desk top is at http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/art/70193302/ - and this is for the desk size (although there is a smaller one available too!).

  3. Hi Rosie,

    I can't find the link for the desk top either and the link you provide above doesn't seem to work. Can you please repost?

    Many thanks!

    1. Hi! The link no longer works because it looks like Ikea isn't making this table top anymore. I would suggest checking out this similar one - http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/S99007026/ - which doesn't have the same glass part of the top, but could easily be painted!
